Chart to display percentage of empty vs number of cells with data

Hi All,
I can't seem to figure out how to chart the number of cells that have data in them vs the number that don't have data. I'm using a single column as the data source, and would like to see the difference. If possible, I would rather not make a new column just for this. any suggestions would be appreciated.

What I'm trying to do is see at a glance how many items I've completed on a list of about 600 items. everytime I finish one item, I put a reference number in a column. All columns with a reference number are done.
