    Chart with multiple data?

I'm not so great with charts so I'm hoping someone can help.

I have a 2 sets of numbers I'd like to graph somehow.

    Input 170 170 170 170 170
    Output 10.2 12 15 15 13.5
    Return 6.00% 7.06% 8.82% 8.82% 7.94%

    Input 10.2 12 15 15 13.5
    Output 9.3 9.9 9.3 9.3 9.3
    Return 91% 83% 62% 62% 69%

The output of the first set of numbers is used as the input for the second set of numbers.

I would like to make a graph that uses the first set of numbers as one line, and then the second set of numbers as another line on the same graph. It isn't really necessary to have the percentages on the graph, just the input Vs output.

That looks like it would work quite well.

This will be a "live" graph though, as I'm basically tracking some trends in a manufacturing process. So what would I need to do to allow me to keep entering data and have it automatically add it to the graph?

    Hi,

Do you mean adding new columns / rows or just changing the values that currently exist?

    Re: Chart with multiple data?

I'll be using the same rows, but adding new data to the input and output rows each time we run the process.

    EDIT.

I actually might change this around to use rows instead of columns, so that the newly inputted data scrolls down instead of across.

    Hi,

Do you mean REPLACING existing data with NEW data or extending the data set with additional columns?

SO I changed it around to look like this. I think it'll work better for tracking these number continuously

    Extending the data.

    Hi,

In that case just use dynamic range names and use the names in the chart.

    See attached.

    Re: Chart with multiple data?

That's interesting, but I don't understand what the 3rd series is exactly? the "input/output" line.

I can't discuss much what the numbers are for, but I'll try to explain myself better and I do apologize because I'm horrible at explaining things.

We have a material that goes through 2 manufacturing processes.

The starting material numbers are in weight. so we have 170Lbs going into the first stage of the process. When the process is complete we end up with the output weight ex, 10.2Lbs. So our 170Lbs has now been reduced to 10.2Lbs.

That output of 10.2Lbs then goes into a second stage of processing and when that is complete we end up with the final product weight ex, 9.3Lbs

These are two separate process however, so there isn't really much of a correlation between stage 1 and stage 2, but I do want to see stage 1 and 2 on the same graph..... because in a way I'm trying to determine if there is a correlation between the two stages.

So the first series/line would show the output from stage one. The second line would show the output from stage 2. They aren't necessarily connected.
Keep in mind that the input weight can change, I used 170Lbs as an example. it could be anywhere from 85Lbs to 200Lbs. This means that the input weight for stage 2 will also vary.

Did that help or did I just make things worse?

    Re: Chart with multiple data?

Oh, I kind of see what it is now.

Series 1 is the input weight, series 2 is the output weight, Series 1 and 2 cover stage 1 of the process. so this would show input Vs output for stage 1.

series 3, input/output, shows the final output of stage 2. So I guess there should be 4 series, one more line that shows the input from stage 2 (i really feel like I'm not making sense again)

The only thing I would like to avoid if at all possible is the overlapping lines.

    Re: Chart with multiple data?

    Hi,

You have me confused now. You seem to be wanting 4 lines. Well that is of course perfectly possible but since the Output for the first data set is EXACTLY the same as the Input for the other data set, then the two lines would lie on top of each other and you'd still only see one.

You could I suppose make one of the lines a dashed line in a different colour but to me that would be confusing. You could make it clearer perhaps by changing the label to say "Output Set 1 = Input Set 2"

Ahhhh.....now that line makes sense, nevermind what I said then.

So how do I copy this to my actual workbook? When I try to edit the data to reflect the name of my spreadsheet and the column/row numbers I always end up with an error.

I have no idea how to make such a graph from scratch.
