    Incorrect chart x-axis display ?

Attached is an image of a chart whose x-axis input values are YYYYMMDD but the displayed chart format is YYYYM000 ... thus probably leading to the introduction of the erroneous slightly inclined line in the middle of the chart.
I figure it is probably a formatting issue but thus far no luck in changing the date format to solve the problem

the second attachment is an image of some of the chart input x-axis date values.

any comments, suggestions, etc, will be much appreciated.

It certainly looks a bit odd. However, without an Excel sheet to work with, it's hard to say what's wrong. Can you post a sheet?

    Spreadsheet did not attach.

It appears to me that you are plotting the data on a scatter plot. It also appears that these "dates", instead of being stored in a date format that Excel can recognize, are being stored as numbers (the first entry in your picture would be seen by Excel as 20 million, 60 thousand, 103). A scatter plot treats the X values as numbers exactly as Excel sees the number, so you get several data points at 20.06 million (which you think means june 2006 but Excel does not see them the same way), then several data points at 20.07 million, and so on.

My first thought would be to get these into Excel as either text strings or in a format the Excel will recognize as a date.

You could try using a line chart (category axis -- not date axis) and see if you like that result. A category axis, though, will not scale the dates along a date scale. It should not be important if you have an entry for each day, but could be problematic if you don't have an entry for each day.

    FROM FAQ
How do I attach a file to a post?
To attach a file to your post, you need to be using the main 'New Post' or 'New Thread' page and not 'Quick Reply'.
To use the main 'New Post' page, click the 'POST REPLY' BUTTON in the relevant thread.

I got the above directions from FAQ - but I cannot find a 'POST REPLY' BUTTON????

    please help

Try the "Go Advanced" button next to the quick reply button. That page should have a "manage attachments" button/link where you can upload attachments

Re: Incorrect chart x-axis display ?

    thanks mrshorty,

I got a message 'your file of 3.84 MB bytes exceeds the forum's limit of 1,000.0 KB for this file type.'
should I reduce the size by reducing the number of rows, or perhaps somehow send it as a zip file, or .....?

Re: Incorrect chart x-axis display ?

It doesn't seem to me that this kind of question needs every single data point to explain the problem. I would expect that a dozen or so representative data points would illustrate the problem, so I would vote for reducing number of rows in the file you wish to upload.

Re: Incorrect chart x-axis display ?

I just noticed that the chart on the graph sheet does not respond to a select data request.
the date column used by the chart for the xaxis is column AX on the analysis sheet.

Re: Incorrect chart x-axis display ?

The example file in this help file (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/ex...2402#BMexample ) has an example using the DATE() function for converting yyyymmdd data into something Excel can recognize as a date. I expect that, once you get these data in there as real dates, the charting issue will resolve itself.

for the record and to whom it may concern---

I sent a reply last night thanking everyone, awarding everyone ''add reputations'' and then marking the thread closed.
experience told me to log off and on to the website and it was definitely there at the time.

also, instant email alerts to replies sometimes work and sometimes not.
