Graphing a three-column CSV that contains the data series name

    Hi,

I'm working with a small program that outputs rows in a CSV in the following format: xvalue, yvalue, data_series_name

What is the best way to get Excel to graph this in (ideally) an area chart or (alternatively) in a scatter plot using the a common xy-plane but different colors for each data_series_name? I can't seem to get it right.

If there is a better way to visualize this, I have access to the source code of the program and can change in pretty much any way.

    Thanks!

It is my opinion that the easiest way to get different formatting for each data_series_name is to plot each data_series_name as its own series. If the data are grouped by data_series_name, then this is somewhat straightforward. If the data are all jumbled together, then the first step will be to sort or filter or otherwise arrange the data so they are grouped by data_series_name.

Once the data are grouped into data_series, then simply create the chart and add each data series to the chart.

    Thanks for the response

The data actually are grouped into data series, in that all the data from a single series appear together. Here's a sample:

    0 61 D1
    1 69 D1
    2 77 D1
    ... ... ...
    8 124 D1
    2 48 D2
    1 49 D2
    ... ... ...
    3 59 D2
    0 68 D3
    1 76 D3
    ... ... ...
    11 154 D3

I'd like to get all on the same graph. One potential issue is that the xvalues could be repeated.

    Is this what you meant?

That's exactly what I meant. It will be easier to have the data grouped like this. And, I would not expect that repeating x values will create any issues.

After importing the data into Excel, select the D1 x and y values and insert a scatter chart. Then, go into the Select Data dialog and add additional series for each of the other data sets.
