Inserting custom Calc fields in a pivot table

I'm using Excel 2013. When I want to create a custom calculation in the pivot table, I would hit the "Insert Calculated Field" menu option. However, I've notice that at times it's grayed out and I can't select it at all. Does anyone know why?
Does it have anything to do with this - in 2013, they created a check box option in the very first step of creating a pivot table that is titled: Add This Data to the DataModel. I did check that box because I want to have one of my fields complete a Distinct Count.
I appreciate any help on this

Yeah, so You are using powerpivot features if you add it to the data model. It is a little different. You can actually create them all on the backend.
