    How to plot where values differ and where they converge?

    Hi,

    I have data arranged in three columns which compare how 3 data sources differ in relation to each other. Hence value 1 means that, e.g., the data in column A is higher than whatever value in column B is. Value -1 means the value is lower in that column as compared to the value in the other column. The text "same" means the values compared are equal to each other.

    How to plot the comparative values of the three columns on a chart so that the chart shows where the values overlap (or are equal to each other as represented by msg "same") and where they are higher or lower in comparison to other columns?

    I would probably get rid of the text string "same" and replace it with 0. Then you can plot the data on just about any chart (line, column, bar) depending on exactly how you want the chart to look. I also get the "numbers stored as text" error, so you will probably want to do something to make sure everything is numbers to avoid any issues with Excel misunderstanding what you want to do.

    Hi,

    Having no problem to to replace 'same' with '0', I cannot figure out how to convert text into numbers in one go. Checked help, and all I can do is to go one cell by cell...

    The other problem, even with a little sample of data stored as numbers, I get strange line charts, which is what I basically would love to get. On the line chart, I expected to get 3 different lines corresponding to the sequence of data in each column. I also expect that the lines converge if the adjacent cells in each column (e.g. A4, B4, C4)share the same number value (e.g. 0,0,0 or 1,1,1). None of this happens. All I get is a bizzare result as this:

    A>B A>C B>C
    1 1 -1
    -1 -1 0
    -1 1 1
    -1 1 1
    -1 -1 1
    -1 1 1

    It looks like it is plotting exactly what you tell it to. I notice that none of the rows is the "same" across -- there are no 0,0,0 or 1,1,1 or -1,-1,-1 entries in this sample set, though it looks to me like, if there were such a set, it would correctly plot all three lines as coming to the same point. I guess I am just not understanding why the displayed chart is not what you are expecting. Can you better explain or illustrate what is wrong with the sample plot?
