    Pivot Table creating numerous columns instead of summing data correctly

    In the attached workbook, my Pivot Tables are working fine for summing up the data in columns by Month but it is not summing it up correctly by Year. There is only three years of data - 2012, 2013, and 2014. Instead of aggregating the data by year into three columns, it creates a new column for every entry - i.e. creating over 900 columns! Why is that and how do I fix it? See file named Excel Forum Help. Thanks.

    I would just create a new Pivot Table sheet attached to the data on Sales Data.

    Rows=State
    Columns=Year
    Values=Sum of Sales

    Jerry - Thanks for your response. I did just what you said numerous times and keep getting the same result - my data is spread out over 900 columns instead of 3. Try it with the file I uploaded and I think you will find the same thing. There must be something in error with my Years data but I don't know what.

    Beautiful!!! Thank you so much! Your video link showed my error. The tutorials I have seen say to simply click in the data field when creating the pivot table, but you highlighted all columns and that made the difference. Thanks again!

    Oh yes, you want all those columns available as options to you as you construct the pivot.
