I am trying to create a graph in Excel 2013 that will show what months a species is present. There is a chart that I am trying to recreate using my own data. I wasn't able to attach the graph by itself so the best I could do was attach the paper (the graph I want is on page 5 at the top). Thank you so much for your help!
You can use a stacked bar chart (gantt chart) to build the floating bars.
Add a dummy series to be plotted on the secondary horizontal axis to give a time scale axis.
Perfect, thank you!! The only thing I am having trouble with now is how to omit using 2013 as the year because my data uses an average of several years. I really appreciate your help!

You can omit the data and just treat 1/jan as 1.
Alright this is what I have now, is there a way to put the months at the bottom of the chart and have them just go from April to October? Thanks!
You can now enter the start/finish date and the secondary axis will update.
You also need to manually set the primary horizontal axis in order for the 2 axes to align correctly.
I have added back the primary axis labels just so you can see what's happening
