Excel Crashed when selecting chart

Excel 2013. When I try to create a scatter plot with smooth lines and markers excel crashes. Any other type of graph is fine. It originally started happening when I downloaded an example from blackboard from a class I am in. I have tried it in a new document with new data and the same thing happens. In trying to figure out what is wrong I have made sure that there are no COM add ins (there are no add ins at all). I have deleted the only toolbar file (.xlb) I could find. I have gone to the control panel and repaired office. It seems very odd to me that only this specific type of graph will cause the program to crash (and it is inconveniently the one that I would like to make). Any help would be appreciated. I am not computer illiterate but would appreciate directions in any help any of you can provide.
