Display Numbers in a Chart with a 'k' for Thousands

I have a chart where the source data is already in pounds thousands, so 20,000 is shown as 20. I have a chart which shows the data values, however 20,000 of course shows as 20. I want to make it very clear that the figure is pounds thousands so I changed the data values on the chart to a custom value of #,##0,"k";0 but this changes all the data values to 0k, infact whatever custom value I use or even linking to the data source changes the data values displayed to '0'.

What am I doing wrong and why won't the custom values work. I assumed that because my source values are already pounds thousand that maybe I need to be using #,0,"k";0, but that doesn't work either. Only when set to General does the chart dispaly the correct data values, only without the addition of a 'k'. How can I get the data values to dispaly as 20k, etc.

Use this number format

0k

Since the raw data is already in thousands, you can remove the comma after the first zero before the "k".

In your current format, if you expand out the decimals on your 0k, you will see it is actually formatted as 0.020k.
