Filter Data Source for Pivot Tables

    Hello,

I am using Excel 2010. I am looking to have a final Excel file full of Pivot Tables reading from another file.
However I wouldn't like for the pivot tables to read everything from their data source: if possible, entire columns left out + possibility to filter inside a column by name.

I found a solution using Power Pivot, which would do all the filtering itself and be part of this final Excel file. One issue is that if your Excel version does not support the PowerPivot add-in, you won't be able to manipulate anything from the tables probably because the data source can't be read.

My goal is to be able to send that file to other users, without having to worry that: a) they are seeing some data I didn't want them to see b) they cannot manipulate themselves the file and play around with the pivot tables & c) I don't have to worry about them having PowerPivot or not.

    Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for the read & help anyways.

You can use MS Query to select the fields you want available to the pivot, then build the pivots off that query.

@romperstomper good call, thanks for helping out.

One additional thing though, it seems we are only able to update the pivot tables from the computer that created those Queries. If the file is shared on an online platform (or shared platform such as Dropbox), and I want each user having direct access to be able to refresh the tables, what changes should I make?
