Do pivot tables really work better when the underlying data is formatted as a table?

I'm creating an Excel template with a lot of data and a lot of pivot tables, so if it works faster when the data is in table format, it's definitely something I'd want to look into. Pivot tables work better when excel data is formatted as a table?

The main virtue of using an Excel table as the source for a pivot table is the expandability of the data. As the size of the data source changes, the pivot table automatically adjusts. This also includes adding new columns. If you add a new column and refresh the pivot table, the new column appears as a field that can be used in the pivot table.

I've not noticed any speed improvement or slowdown using excel tables as a data source for a pivot table.
