Insert Table is Greyed Out - My head is going to explode!!!!

Hi Excel Forum, I am trying to add a table to a chart I’ve created, but the option is greyed out as is pivot table. I’ve scoured the internet for a solution and have tried everything below.

    • The worksheets are not grouped.
    • The file is not shared or protected.
    • I have not selected multiple worksheets.
    • I have the setting in Excel Options, Advanced, Display options for this workbook, For objects show set to ALL.
    • Track Changes on the Review tab is set deactivated.
    • I’ve tried copy and pasting into a new file.
    • I’ve tried creating a new and very simple chart and still can’t add a table!!!!

I am using Excel 2013 that is part of a Microsoft Office student package and are not sure if this is creating my issue?

    Thanks in advance.

Bi Bazman and welcome to the forum.

When you say "trying to add a table to a chart" do you mean a Data Table?

What type of chart is it?

If you open a new workbook, create a basic range of data and plot that on a chart (of the same type) can you add a data table to that?
If not, if you change the chart type in that example workbook to a bar or line chart, can you add the data table to that one?

Just trying to narrow down what the issue may be.

Hi BSB, many thanks for your speedy response. I've included an attached example of what I'm trying to do. So the chart contains basic information which has uses as corresponding data worksheet to display the line on the chart. What I want to do is simply add a table using "Insert" to include some additional information. Sort of just like inserting a textbox for extra info. But I need it in a table format so it other information can be added at a later date. For the chart example I just Inserted a picture, so this cannot be edited later which is of no use to me.

Is your plan for the "table" to drive the chart? So when you add data to or adjust the data already in the table the chart updates to reflect that?

Hi BSB, No, the data driving the chart is on a separate worksheet. The data (additional information) I want to insert in the table is supplementary to what the chart is displaying. So all I want to do is enter some text into the chart, but in table format. Can't though as my insert table option is greyed out.

Incidentally, I had a colleague check this on their "professional" version of Excel and the problem is the same. So I guess its got to be a configurable issue in the file somewhere?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

You cannot insert a Table on a chart. What you might consider is creating a table elsewhere in the workbook and then using the Camera tool to insert a live picture of the Table onto the chart- changes in the Table will be reflected in the picture.
