    Display points in X/Y coordinates?

    Hello all,

I am trying to display a pretty long list of points (partially with duplicate names) in X/Y coordinates. When I create a scatter-chart with X/Y I get two data-series displayed, one for X-coordinates, one for Y.

    What I have is e.g.
    Name X-coord Y-coord
    A 648.345 3999.32
    B 347.865 3999.32
    B 197.625 3999.32
    C 648.345 -3999.32
    A 197.625 -3999.32
    A 836.145 -4089.32
    D 460.545 -4089.32

With all data-points I would expect some kind of rectangle. The above is just a very short excerpt.

Switching between row and column-data also does not help. I would need to combine the two columns of X and Y into one cordinate.

    Anyone any ideas?

    Cheers,

    Moadll

    Hello Glenn,

I always included the name-column and with that I get the two lines (hopefully shown) in the attachment.

If I go for just the data-lines I do not have a reference on what is what, e.g. where the A-points are. This is something that would also be important for me.

PS: Seems the attachment is not present, how can I insert graphics here?

Re: Display points in X/Y coordinates?

I see a picture in post #2. From what I see, when you include the 1st column (of text), Excel is using that first column for the X values, then using the other two columns as Y values. Since the text column has not numerical meaning, Excel is treating the X values as the count numbers {1,2,3,...}.

How do you want the names to be a part of the chart? As data labels or as separate series/legend entries?

    Hello MrShorty,

if I have the choice then I would take both, data-labels in the diagram and legend-items outside the diagram. ;o)

However the important one wouldd be legend-items outside the main-diagram, preferrably with all items of one name (A, B, C, ...) in one color (if possible).

    Cheers,

    Moadll

Re: Display points in X/Y coordinates?

If I understand correctly, the best way to get what you want is to rearrange the data something like
Please Login or Register to view this content.
Then you can use the left column as your X axis data, the other four columns each become a separate data series, and you can use the first row as your data series names/legend entries.

One of the easiest ways to get this kind of data table from a "list" like this is to use a pivot table. Simply instruct the pivot table to use the names as the column labels, the X values as the row labels, and the Y values (technically sum of Y, so there cannot be duplicate name+Xcoord combinations) as the Values field. If you use a pivot table, you must recognize that an Excel pivot chart created from a pivot table does not support the XY scatter chart type, so you have to be very careful how you create the chart so that it stays as a normal chart and never becomes a pivot chart. http://peltiertech.com/regular-chart...-pivot-tables/

Once the chart is created like this, it should be easy to add the legend and data labels with series name as the label, as desired.
