    Auto Sort Pivot Table

    Hello,

I have set up several pivot tables based off a sheet in excel that feed pivot charts. I need those charts to display information highest to lowest, left to right as data is inserted into the sheet that feeds the pivot table. I have it set to automatically refresh whenever the file is opened, however I need the charts to show as stated. The data that needs sorted in the pivot table is a value, not a label - so I can't use the sort -> more options -> auto sort. Basically I have been able to get everything to work how I want and to update the charts and tables as I enter information but I can't figure out how to get them to plot on the chart from largest to smallest automatically - in case I add information that changes which is higher.

    Hi,

It is possible to sort a row or column field by a value field in the More Sort Options section.

only if it has a drop down - this has no button at the top. the only way to sort a value field in a pivot table that I've seen is to select a cell in the range and right click and sort... but there is no more options choice that lets you set up automatic sort

You must sort the row or column field by the value field rather than trying to sort the value field directly.

This comment is confusing and doesn't make sense to me. Its in a pivot table and there is no button at the top of the row in the pivot table to sort with. THe only way I can sort values is to click in the field on a value, right click and sort largest to smallest. If there is another way, I need help with how to do it, because just saying "You must sort....." doesn't help me.

It would be helpful if you were to at least give some idea of your pivot table layout- preferably as a sample workbook.

The basic instruction is to click the drop down at the top of your row field and use the sort options there.

This is what I'm trying to tell you. There is no drop down option on a pivot table where a value is being used. Hence the problem lol

I am attaching a sample and you'll see there is no drop down above the values/numbers.

Click on arrow/dropdown beside "Row Labels" as xlnitwit stated.

Go to more sort options and set Descending by: "Sum of Amount".

Or do you not see that?

    Re: Auto Sort Pivot Table

I do see that, but I must be not understanding something. Sum of Amount is what I'm trying to sort, not the first column under Row Labels. - Also I need a way to have it sort automatically should the numbers/amounts in Sum of Amount change. But thank you, your directions have been the most clear so far.

    Re: Auto Sort Pivot Table

If you follow direction, it will sort on Sum of Amount. And it will update itself if you expand source range.

Note: There is dropdown in the Sort Options menu, where you can choose value field instead of Row Label.

Okay, I think I got it to work. Thanks guys! I don't know if my computer is blocking it or if its your files, but I can not see the png's you attached. I think I was able to get it to work regardless though. Thanks again. I'll update in a few days to see if it does what I want it to do.
