Post Display table (using external DB) using custom formatting?

    Hey guys

I need help formatting my tables. My data is pulled from an external DB and ive used the query editor to do some pre formatting on the tables. however I dont want to display the data traditionally (row by row, col by col), is it possible to format and display the columns and rows in the table differently when using external data connection?

How are you pulling the data from the external db? Are you using MS-Query? MS-Query will allow you to move the order of the columns. I'm not sure what you mean by displaying the table "differently." What do you mean by different. Perhaps you can attach a workbook with some sample data (not sensitive) as you have it now and a mock up of how you would like it to be.

    To Attach a File:

    1. Scroll down to the window below your post Additional Options
    2. In the frame Attach Files you will see the button Manage Attachments
    3. Click the button.
    4. A new window will open titled Manage Attachments - Excel Forum.
    5. Click the Browse... button to locate your file for uploading.
    6. This will open a new window File Upload.
    7. Once you have located the file to upload click the Open button. This window will close.
    8. You are now back in the Manage Attachments - Excel Forum window.
    9. Click the Upload button and wait until the file has uploaded.
    10. Close the window and then click Submit.
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Question Re: Display table (using external DB) using custom formatting?

I use an external connection (ODBC) to a DSN readonly DB. Excel is populated row by row like you would typically expect.

Re: Display table (using external DB) using custom formatting?

The picture is nice, but I'm going to be lazy and not take the time to recreate the workbook especially when it seems that you have already done so. Could you please attach a sample workbook? Thanks.

Looking at it, it seems that we might be able to do something with a pivot table. If not, then with a pivot table and VB.

Re: Display table (using external DB) using custom formatting?

    Hi,

The short answer is probably no, not directly with a linked query. You could, however, certainly use ADO/DAO to obtain a recordset from your data source and then output that in whatever layout you want.
