date on x axis of scatter chart is incorrect

in my spread sheet I have a column of dates formatted as dd-mmm-yy. The dates range from 5 may 11 to
    17 mar 17

The spread sheet also has a column of systolic blood pressures. the pressure data may or may not exist for many of the dates.

If I choose a line chart the blood pressure shows up just as I had imagined it would

But If i choose a scatter chart, I would have expected the data to be plotted against the dates found in
the spread sheet. Instead the data ends up as one glob of data.

Looking carefully at the chart date data I observed the dates are not copied correctly. I would get dates like 3 oct 54 which is totally incorrect.

I know the dates are formatted in the spread sheet. Perhaps the graph does not know how to look at the data format and thus guesses the format and in so doing gives me some weird answer.

I looked on the web for help, but most of the help referred to excel of an old year. My excel is office 365 and so is up todate. if I right click on the graph I do not get "tools" and hence i can not get at formating for the axis as advised.

    Any pointers?

    thank you

It's hard to tell exactly because you scatter chart is based on data in another workbook.

But the series on the left has no x values so is defaulting to a sequential increment value. Try setting the x values to those used by the other series.

Re: date on x axis of scatter chart is incorrect

    Good Morning Andy!

I am not sure why "based on data in another workbook" matters? the spread sheet you see is not a jpg but is actively reproduced when you open it. it has no pointers to any other workbook, or for that matter, any other worksheet.

Per your recommendation, I did change both x data to be the identical dates of my data. the graph did change but the date problem remains. Thank you for pointing that error out.

I need to figure out how to get the dates in the graph to show up properly. the ranges for each curve (systolic and diastolic) that point to the dates is correct.

So....I am thinking that the only thing that could be going wrong is that the graph x axis must have a format specification and it is not probably set as data type "date". I just can't find that specification.

See if this is an improvement. The data has been condensed so that it includes only those data points where blood pressure readings were taken by using aggregate based formulas. The horizontal axis is formatted to show data between July 31, 2012 and April 26, 2015.

Re: date on x axis of scatter chart is incorrect

The data for the xy-scatter comes from
    =SERIES("diastolic",,'C:\362d23dbdc611807\Butterfly Data\Butterfly Docs\ActivityCenters\Life\People\Personal\CC health\Prevention\health measurements\[health measurements 5 jun 15 .xlsx]Raw Data'!R4C5:R685C5,2)

You have a bad date in your data, cell R127C2. Correct that and you should be able to use the dates as the x values in a line graph. If you want a true xy-scatter then make sure both x and y series have correct range references.
A line chart will treat the x axis as dates.
