How to chart multiple data points on a single chart?

This is probably a simple fix but I can not find it anywhere...What I am trying to do is overlay a line chart of an equity curve (Running PNL $) over a line chart of the S&P 500 closing values.

The tricky part is I have daily data for the S&P 500 closing values, however, the equity curve data is only for days where there was a trade. So in a given year I would have about 250 values for the S&P but the equity curve may only have 50 values.

I know how to make a line graph of each, how do I overlay the EC on the S&P chart so the dates match up and ideally with 2 Y axis values (one for the S&P and the other for the EC value)?

    I am using excel 2016.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I by no means am an Excel pro :-) But I think what you are asking for is for a secondary axis... I quickly found a link to this article on the MS Support site: https://support.office.com/en-us/art...rs=en-US&ad=US
When the numbers in a chart you created vary widely from data series to data series, or when you have mixed types of data (for example, price and volume), you can plot one or more data series on a secondary vertical (value) axis. The scale of the secondary vertical axis shows the values for the associated data series. A secondary axis works well in a chart that shows a combination of column and line charts.
For your dataset though I believe that you will need your Running P&L and the EC populated together... i.e. Date | Running P&L | EC

BTW, I did do a quick sample using your CSV and when I went in and adjusted for a Line and Line style when selecting a graph style is "seemed" to have worked.

Hope this can help you move forward.

Refer attach file. You can required like this.
Creating graph in sheet1. In this graph pnl & sp both in one graph.
(Range for example. You can change accordingly)
    I think this you want.

Thank you both for taking the time to weigh in.

Neither are quite what I'm looking for.

AVK's chart was close as it used the same dates at the bottom but still not what I am trying to do.

Here is a pic of what I am trying to do:

Re: How to chart multiple data points on a single chart?

Here's how I would do it (starting from your sample file in post #1):

    1) Select A2:B1500.
    2) Insert line chart to create the line chart.
    3) Select D2:E500. ctrl-c to copy to clipboard.
    4) Select chart->Paste special -> As new series with category values in first column, but do not replace existing categories.
    5) Select the new series -> format series -> plot on secondary axis.
    6) Add secondary horizontal axis (not sure where this command is in 2016 -- look under add chart elements or something similar).
    7) Format secondary horizontal axis so that the min and max dates on this axis match the min and max dates for the primary horizontal axis.
    8) Other formatting as desired.
