Extra mystery white bars on excel bar chart

    Hi there,

I have created a bar chart with 181 bars and Excel seems to have added some extra white bars (or bar separations?) to my bar chart! When I resize the bar chart, these white bars move position. Can anyone please tell me what they are and how to get rid of them? When I copy the chart to word they are still there and they do appear on printed versions of my chart, which I don't want.

Here are some screenshots; the first image is one size, and the second is when i simply resize the chart.

I would be really grateful for any advice.

    Thanks,

    Maria

Difficult to say without seeing the workbook. Are you able to upload it?

Re: Extra mystery white bars on excel bar chart

Are there any categories/entries in the data for the chart that are blank or 0 or text or very small compared to the bulk of the values? If so a filter may be suitable for hiding those empty/blank/text/error/non-numeric rows (which should hide them in the chart) http://www.wikihow.com/Use-AutoFilter-in-MS-Excel

Is your horizontal axis a category or a date axis? If it is a date axis, and your data set does not have data or records for some dates (such as leaving weekends out or weekends are blank), those will show up in a column chart as "empty" columns. If this is the case, perhaps changing the axis to a text/category axis may resolve the issue (and may create other issues)

That's all I've got without seeing the spreadsheet.

    Hi Maria,

My guess is that you have zero for the bar values. You can suppress those zeros in one of the dialogs. Look at:
    http://www.techrepublic.com/article/...n-excel-chart/
    https://superuser.com/questions/6542...an-excel-chart

The two above links are not what I was looking for. There is a button of the dialog where you select the range to graph. On that dialog is a checkbox (in older versions of Excel) to not drop to zero.

OK I've found it.. Called Hidden and Empty Cell Settings...

Finally here is a picture of that dialog..

    Hi Marvin,

I did wonder about the point about a zero data point that you (and Mr S) have mentioned but was puzzled by the white areas changing position when the chart window is resized, which didn't seem consistent with it being associated with any particular point.

    @muzzy..
What's the restriction on uploading the chart. If it's sensitive data then just anonymise it. We don't mind how many Michael Mice or Donald Ds you have!

    Hey Richard,

I thought it might be bad pixels on her monitor until she said they moved when she did a resize. Then I remembered Teylyn showed me the "Hidden and Empty Cell Settings" dialog. That is my second guess.
