New to charts - Help Please?

    Hi All,

I have some data of incoming and outgoing cash flow from our company and i'm wanting to see this data in a waterfall type of chart. I understand that the data in itself might not be set out in the best way in order to create a waterfall chart, if this is the case, can you please advise?

The table is set up the way it is as we have different people entering data on the same document at different times. If you see the attached copy of ours you'll see what I mean.

In the first section (Colums A-E) our customer co-ordinator will input the customer name, the amount to be paid and the date the payment Is due. This section is updated daily
In the second section (Colums F-H) our wages dept enter the wages per week and also PAYE, Pensions and fuel amounts - This section Is updated weekly
In the final section (Colums J-L) our accounts chap enters in the supplier payment name, amount to be paid and date to be paid.

Lastly In Cell B1 we have the bank account starting balance.

What I've been trying to achieve (for several days now ) is a waterfall chart that will have the dates of the month along the bottom, and money in account on the Y axis. So on the 1st of the month it will have the starting amount, then the data will be sorted into date order (somehow!!) and then shown going up and down through the month as customers are paid and as we pay wages and suppliers.

Is this possible or am I dreaming!!!??

PS: - I understand that this is more than just a small bit of help I require! If this is something that can be done, but will take some time i'd be willing to pay for this service!

You say you have been trying for days, but your sample file does not include any of your attempts. Examples of those failed attempts could help us understand what you are having trouble with.

The simplest beginner approach to a waterfall chart is to make a stacked column chart. Most of the effort is in computing and arranging the source data in the spreadsheet. Once the data is correctly arranged, the chart is easy to create.

This tutorial covers this possibility, and discusses other possibilities for creating waterfall charts: http://peltiertech.com/excel-waterfa...bridge-charts/ I would suggest you start there. Let us know where you get stuck and we'll help as best we can.

    Thanks for the reply MrShorty.

You cannot see my attempts as I haven't sent you over the actual workbook that I've been working on as it has lots of sensitive data, so I just copied and pasted the general format of the table to a new workbook and sent that in. - I assumed this would be the norm,

    As for things ive tried;

I've tried all different types of charts, playing with all the different axis etc - trying to change the data that it reads and displays.
I've tried creating a separate table adjacent to the main table (which would be hidden) that pulls the data from the main table into a new one and then I presumed that this table would be able to "be sorted" into date order, however when this tries to sort the data gets mixed up.

I have copied and pasted that onto this workbook. Please see attached. - It appears that when the data is sorted it is not keeping the rows in the table lined up!?

I am still not sure exactly what you want your waterfall chart to look like, so it is difficult to make specific recommendations.

Rather than linking and sorting like you are doing, I could see creating the chart table in O:Q using lookup and/or conditional sum type functions. Exactly what that needs to look like will depend on exactly what you want the waterfall chart to look like.

Re: New to charts - Help Please?

sorry, the last post didn't show all my text!

I'm wanting to have the x asis auto sorted into date order as and when inputted. The X asis will always start on the starting amount. The Y axis would be the account balance in £'s.

As and when a date/amount is inputted this will show on the relevant date on the waterfall chart.

I have tried to draw this out in excel!!

    Hope this helps!??
