Plotting a Parallel Line to Existing Line

Dear Sir:

I have a chart with four points and a trend line is fitted through these 4 points, giving me equation of straight line. I have a 5th point at a certain distance (Point A in attached graph) from the existing trend line. How can I draw a trend line through Point A which would be parallel to the existing trend line?

Your prompt response will be very highly appreciated.

Hi asifmian,

Because you know the slope of the line and what point it goes through you can use the "Slope Point" form of the equation of the line.

If point A has coordinates (x1,y1) and you already have the slope as .4631 you would use these to create the parallel line.

(y - y1) = .4631(x - x1) is the answer.
