Can't move chart because of bounding box

I've created a simple doughnut chart that I would like to move so that it sits on the left had size of the chart box. However whenever I click on the chart a series of dotted lines appear, far bigger than the actual chart itself, that prevent it from moving. What/why are these lines there, and how can I get rid of them?

Will you please attach a sample Excel workbook? We are not able to work with or manipulate a picture of one and nobody wants to have to recreate your data from scratch.

    1. Make sure that your sample data are REPRESENTATIVE of your real data. The use of unrepresentative data is very frustrating and can lead to long delays in reaching a solution.

    2. Make sure that your desired solution is also shown (mock up the results manually).

    3. Make sure that all confidential data is removed or replaced with dummy data first (e.g. names, addresses, E-mails, etc.).

    4. Try to avoid using merged cells as they cause lots of problems.

Unfortunately the attachment icon doesn't work at the moment, so to attach an Excel file you have to do the following: just before posting, scroll down to Go Advanced and then scroll down to Manage Attachments. Now follow the instructions at the top of that screen.

Please pay particular attention to point 2 (above): without an idea of your intended outcomes, it is often very difficult to offer appropriate advice.

Hi Ali. I appreciate your reply but there's nothing more to add. The picture I posted shows the problem in its entirety. I cannot move the chart because of those bounding boxes.

The link is dead (404), and in any case, nobody can troubleshoot a picture to find a solution for you. It's up to you, of course, but you are more likely to get help if you provide the workbook, or a suitable copy of it displaying the issue.

    ok.. here we go.

Click on the pie chart and try to move it left or right within the chart box... a series of blue dotted lines appear around it and prevent it from moving.

Yes, I see the issue. If you make the pie chart a tiny bit smaller, it will move freely in the space.

OK thanks. I have this with a lot of my charts. Any idea what those lines are and why they are there?

    I'm afraid I don't.

If that takes care of your original question, please select Thread Tools from the menu link above and mark this thread as SOLVED. Thanks.

Re: Can't move chart because of bounding box

Those dotted lines usually denote the area occupied by the axes.

Once the pie has been moved even a little they disappear/reduce.

Re: Can't move chart because of bounding box

    Thanks, Andy and Ali.

I'll close this thread because the issue has been resolved, ie I can now work around it. But I'm still baffled by those lines. If they are axes why are they 3 times the size of the chart? Also they don't disappear when the chart moves.

Here's an example for the curious...
