    How to include different y-axis for different series in one graph

    Hi,

    I am trying to plot different data series in one graph however when I come to plot it it all provides me with the y-axis and automatically completes the x-axis. Before excel used to pop up with both the x-axis and the y-axis box when selecting data for a graph. This causes series 2 y-axis values to become associated with the wrong dates.

    Can someone else with this?

    Thanks

    Hi cbatrody,

    Thanks for the reply.

    I want to be able to plot both Column B and Column D into the graph as they both have different dates. The graph you provided does not do this. For example, D16 has a date 08/09/2017 and E16 is 0.9 but this is not reflected as such in the graph. In the graph, the 0.9 corresponds to a date of 11/08/2017 which is taken from the x-axis of Column B

    How important is the "date axis" to this chart? This sort of thing is really easy on a scatter chart, but you lose the really nice date axis that is available on line charts. I also notice that your series 2 x values are still column B, but I get the impression that you want to use column D for these values. Here's how I would proceed:

    Scatter chart option (easier but x values are treated strictly as numbers. does not have date axis options).
    1) Select chart -> Design -> Change chart type -> XY scatter -> desired subtype (markers with lines).
    2) Select series 2 -> Design -> Select Data -> Edit series 2 -> Specify X values from column D.

    Line chart option. (more difficult because it requires use of the secondary axis system. offers date axis options).
    1) Select Series 2 -> Move X values for series 2 to column D.
    2) Format Series 2 -> Series options -> plot series on secondary axis. (size chart area so that the secondary axis is visible).
    3) Chart tools -> Layout -> Axes -> secondary horizontal axis -> display left to right axis.
    4) Format both secondary axes so that max, min, units match up with the primary axis system.

    Perfect. That works now.

    Now the issue I have it two things:

    1) The graph seems to automate to portrait mode and not landscape. I cannot edit the page layout because it is greyed out.
    2) When altering the colours of the series, other series also change automatically.

    Can someone advise on how to change this?

    Not sure I can help with either of those concerns, as I never see similar behavior in my copy of Excel. I can open the file you attached to the first post and change the page layout at will. I can also format any one of the two data series and the other does not change. I do not recall any other situation where this behaved the way you describe. I would guess that there is something specific to your Excel installation or the latest file that is triggering this behavior, but have no idea what to look for.
