Is there any way to add a bold horizontal line at zero on the new 2016 Waterfall Charts?

On the older style chart (waterfalls built from tutorials) I would be able to click the zero value on the horizontal axis and in axis options i would just change the width.

But that doesn't work on these new waterfall charts. Also I'm not sure if I can create a second series on these charts to be a darker line on zero.

To be clear, I have a waterfall chart with a max value of 25K, and a min value of 10K, I'm trying to create a viable horizontal line across zero.

    Any ideas?

Try attaching a sample workbook - that might tempt someone to try to help.

Your Excel version is Excel 365 it it's the subscription model, not 360 ...

So is it just not possible with this new version of the excel chart? I know that it's limited in many ways..

Does not look like it is possible. As you already know the new charts are limited in their formatting and ability to be extended with extra dummy series.

I have held off commenting because I don't have a new version of Excel to test on. I will point out that, if the new version's built in waterfall chart cannot handle adding a line or formatting the axis in this way, you should be able to do it the old fashioned way where you build the waterfall chart as a stacked column chart, then format the axis as needed, or add a dummy series as needed.

Re: Is there any way to add a bold horizontal line at zero on the new 2016 Waterfall Chart

Sorry for the delay...I still haven't found a solution but wanted to comment that yes it's possible (and easy) doing it the old way but I have waterfalls that are updated often by multiple people so they need to be dynamic. But the labels on the old way must be manually adjusted (since it's a hidden series) every time, and in some cases don't even show up if the axis is manually adjusted (so you have to add text boxes).

So..that's why I am looking at the new way of doing it.

    Thanks!

Hey, I had the same issue and found your thread.

Shame it is not possible in the formatting, but thought I would share my cheat if it helps someone. May be frustrating if you are resizing the chart often, but as a one-off to get your waterfall looking good I found this way quick and easy.

Go to Insert and shapes and draw a horizontal line at zero. You can either do it by eye or add major gridlines to guide you
Format the line colour as you wish to see it (choose your favourite shade of grey)
Right click on the chart area (top of chart) and format - No fill
Right click on the plot area (centre of chart) and do the same
Click on the line you created, right click and send to back
Go to "View" and hide gridlines

Your chart should now look as expected. Sending the line to back means it doesn't strike through one of your bars.
