    Visualization (maybe pyramid chart) question

    Hi!

I'm brainstorming ideas for a visualization and had initially thought pyramid, but maybe you guys have better ideas.

Here are some things I am pondering:

It'd be nice if it was date sensitive. That is, if we could select a user defined range, terrific.

Chart should show total $$$ somewhere.

Brackets with user defined dollar ranges.

The number of donations in each bracket.

Since gifts have ID numbers, it'd be great to count the number of unique id numbers in each bracket to arrive at a number of unique donors.

    Thanks!

    Mike

How much of this is about chart creation and how much is about computing the summary data? I think it is going to be difficult to give you any kind of detailed approach without some knowledge of your data and exactly what you need to do with it.

Where you seem to desire both summarizing data and filtering the result, my first thought would be to use a pivot table/chart. Are you familiar with Excel's pivot table and charting utilities? Are your source data arranged in a way that will be easy to pivot (arranged as a nice flat list/database)?

well, there are really two tasks ahead of me. one is going to be creating a separate sheet where things are summarized and sliced up and the other is some basic visualizations.

The data is pretty nicely organized. Column headers and each row represents a single transaction. I've used pivot tables in the past, never pivot charts, and have a rudimentary understanding of excel charting - mostly simple bar charts and things of that sort.

Would pivot charts be of use here?

    Thanks!

Pivot charts might be of use here. I am not very experienced with pivot tables and charts. I usually find that the first step is to create the pivot table. Once I know how to create the pivot table, the pivot chart just shows what is in the pivot table (since pivot charts are pretty limited in formatting options and such).

Talking in generalities like this is kind of difficult. Can you mock up a small data set and indicate how you would like the data summarized, what kind of chart you would like, with some expected results?

What I see in your sample file is what I think is called a "dashboard". I don't do dashboards, so I am probably not the best one to help you with this. This page has several links to several expert sources about putting dashboards together: https://peltiertech.com/dashboards/ I would recommend some time with those resources to get an idea of the tools available in Excel to perform these tasks.

I can see some ways of doing individual tasks (FREQUENCY() function for the first "box", lookup and/or filter type functions for the other boxes), but I am not skilled at putting it all together in this way.
