I am trying to create a scatter graph but cant seem to get excel to help me out!
I want the axes to be like the chart on the left, but with the data labels to show the group names (eg a, b, c, etc). Trouble is, when I select the group names, the chart ends up looking like the chart on the right, so they are somehow plotted as an additional series.

What I am after is something that looks like this (I did this one manually by using text box):

It might help to explain exactly how you are trying to add these data labels, because it does not sound like you are adding the data labels correctly. In addition. Your profile indicates that you are using Excel 2003, which does not have the "add data labels and use link the data label text to cells" option built in. If you are using Excel 2010 or older, then I would encourage you to download Rob Bovey's free XY chart labeler add-in (appspro.com ) and use that utility to add the top row as data labels. If you have 2013 or later, you can simply add the data labels then format the data labels to use the text from the top row as the data label text.

Thanks for the response. I solved this my upgrading from excel 2010. I had been holding back as I don't like change although I have had access to it for some time.
Have to say even with the upgrade it wasn't easy to do, especially if there were some 0 values or N/A values. But I got there. Thanks.
