    Problem with date chart

In short I need to create a chart with dates on the horizontal axis. I have events which took place during the course of the year at defined date with set duration. When i input all the data the horizontal axis is fine but in the vertical i have spikes instead of lines. Please advice what to change when creating the chart. I need for each even a mark at the start and at the end connected with line. The number of events which i will have is still unknown for me but I included 3 examples.

Thank you in advance for the help

    Re: Problem with date chart

    I don't understand your question.

The only chart in your sample file (on the Graph tab) is linked to a file on your computer. It appears to be more of a step chart than a line chart with spikes, so I don't think this is the chart you are looking for help on. Did I miss the problematic chart?

I note that your formulas in the "data" tab are mostly returning empty string "" to attempt to simulate "blank" or "no result". Empty string "" is a nice return value for tables, but it tends to show up wrong on charts, as Excel treats "" (and any other text string) as the number 0. It is not clear to me what these "" are really trying to do, but you might review this essay to understand how to attempt to simulate blanks in charts: https://peltiertech.com/mind-the-gap...g-empty-cells/

If I understand what you are trying to do, I might be tempted to use a stacked bar chart based on the table in "Graph":
    1) Add helper column =H16-G16 and =I16-H16 to the table.
    2) Insert a stacked bar chart using column D as the x axis data, column H as series 1, the first helper column as series 2, and the second helper column as series 3.
    3) Format the horizontal axis so its minimum value is 42736 (serial number for 1 Jan 2017) and the major unit is 30 (so each tick mark is about 1 month).

That should give a horizontal bars that represent the time from incident to raised and raised to resolved.

    Is that even close?

Thank you for the idea I will test it now. I understand the explanation is not really clear. In fact i was considering creating chart close to Gantt chart. But what you suggested makes sense now.

I tried your idea but the bars are not horizontal for. If it is not an issue can you show me one example with 1 horizontal bar I can manage the rest.
Attached is the basic idea of how the look should be. Lines and boxes are not necessity, bars will be fine.

I can upload a spreadsheet until later. I may be misunderstanding, but I am surprised that your bars chart is not oriented horizontally. Is it possible that you inadvertently used a stacked column chart rather than a stacked bar chart (I recognize that we often use "bar" to refer to both column and bar charts, but they are technically different chart types).

    Re: Problem with date chart

Dont worry about the spreadsheet I manged to do it already. I used your I dea and instead of the initial graph I did a "fake" Gantt Chart which works fine for my supervisor therefore. Everyone is happy. Thank you for the help
