grouping data to show total sum from a pivot table?

    Hi there,

Apologies I cannot provide a sample, but here is the problem which I hope is clear:

I have a large set of data with account name and account totals for each customer (approx 700 rows).

Column A has unique numbers for each customer starting with 4 different letters followed by number.

    For example: AB01, AB02 etc
    CD01, CD02 etc
    RR01, RR02 etc
    TT01, TT02 etc

Column D has the amounts held for each customer.

How do I create a pivot or even better a chart to show the total for AB, CD, RR and TT customers together?

Please let me know if this is not clear.

    Regards

    N

Attach a sample workbook (not a picture!). Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.

You can either group them manually in a pivot table or use a helper column using =left(a2,2) to extract the groups and pivot on that new column.

    Hi Don,

    Thanks for your reply.
I apologise, but I don't quite follow how I would apply your suggestions?
What do you mean by grouping manually?

    Regards

    Nim

In a pivot table you can Ctrl+click to select multiple items in a field, then right click and group them. Using a formula in the source data is less work though.
