Resize option for charts when on separate sheet not possible

    Hi,
right click on blank area of chart, select move then opt for new sheet, name the sheet, wish to make the chart wider as it features 365 days but right click chart and choose format chart area, select size option and width and height are greyed out.

Instead I size it on same sheet as data, make it full page width, now I can see my data lines.
right click move and move to separate sheet and it becomes full height and a set proportion with large gaps left and right and no longer the required width and my data lines are not visible and wrecked. right click and access size and its greyed out again.

Has Excel a fundamental flaw here as its impossible to size the chart at all on a separate sheet and displaying it on such wrecks the display.

I can confirm that if a chart is on a Chart Sheet instead of embedded in a worksheet, Excel fixes the size. You cannot change it. If you need to manage the size, then create a worksheet dedicated for that chart and embed it in the worksheet.

You are not really asking a question, so there is no answer.

I do not know why Microsoft made this "design decision," which you may consider a "flaw." (See also "bug vs. feature" )

Re: Resize option for charts when on separate sheet not possible

    Hi,
what you are suggesting I think is create a new sheet, then go back to the one with the columns of data, highlight the data that is to be turned into a chart, go insert chart and click on the sheet just made tab and insert the chart there, then edit the data via the right click menu option moving between the two sheets ?
I try that though and the chart appears immediately on the data columns sheet, if I activate the sheet I just made first and go insert chart I get a blank chart.

I am copy pasting the addresses of the series from the one I dont want on page to the one I do want, very time consuming, there is no option to copy paste it all across or select chart, go format tool and apply the format to it. To bring the formatting in I first have copy pasted the chart to a new sheet, then by carefuly copy pasting the addresses to the series I have it linked now to the source data sheet !

At the moment I have this chart filling screen width and its smothering my data and as its 5 years of rows its taking forever to drag it down to where the data ends !

It is just wrong that the move function wrecks the design and resizes it to half the width I need to see that many days. There will be folk requiring c chart without MSoft redesigning it in the move !

Also no option to enter a location in move mode if on same sheet as data.

I am a little confused by what you are describing, and could help more if you attach your file.

No, I am suggesting that you create a new sheet, go back to your chart sheet, right click, and Move Chart.

I have never seen a chart design change after a Move operation.

No need to. If you want to move a chart on the same sheet just click on the chart to activate it then click-and-drag to where you want it.

Re: Resize option for charts when on separate sheet not possible

A chart sheet is design to prints on a single page, which is why the chart area is not resizable. Check the page setup is as you expect.

Changing a chartobject to a chart sheet or vice versa does not change the chart type.

You can copy > Paste Special between charts. You are then given the option of All, Formula or Formats.
