How can I remove the duplicate numbering for the headers in a pivot table?

Excel adds a number to all the duplicate header names. For example there is a header called "Product" the next header called Product is now automatically changed to "Product2" and the following Product header to "Product3" etc.

How do I prevent this auto numbering? I am using the wrong type of table? I need a table where I can sort the data by individual columns. I don't need to be able to pivot the data though, can you recommend the correct table for me?

    Hi,
You simply cannot have duplicate headers in a table because it would break any structured reference formulas. What you can do to make them look the same is add a varying number of spaces after the title- one space for the second set of each column header, two spaces for the third set and so on.

    Hi xlnitwit,

Thanks. That does technically solve the issue, but is not a good way to do it as I have to add a random number of spaces to every heading which is intensive. Perhaps there is another solution.

    Regards

You could automate that with code. Alternatively, you could not include the header row in your table- Excel will add another row with default column names like Column1 etc. You can format those to not show the text and just have the autofilters for filtering/sorting. Neither is absolutely ideal- do you really need the data to be a Table?

That is a good idea, using column names and hiding that row. I'm not sure what you mean when you ask if the data needs to be a table? I need to be able to sort the data by the different columns at will, i.e. sort by Pigment weight, sort by Release Agent weight. Is there a better way to do that? Thanks for your help!

It doesn't have to be an actual Table to sort/filter it- a regular range will work for that. And with a regular range, you can duplicate headers as much as you like!

Ok, but I need the whole row to stay together when I sort by different parameters. I have done multiple Tests so I need the data for each test to stay on the same row when they are re-arranged. If I did a range then all my test data would get mixed up?

    Good evening,

So, did you ever figure this out? I've been making charts for my new automotive business and I have been doing a bunch of research learning excel techniques for the past year.

I was having this same issue and I couldn't find any answers to how to get rid of the header number duplicate indicators.

But I might have found a simple resolution to the problem which won't affect anything on the chart that you created. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS BACKSPACE ON EXCELS AUTOMATED NUMBER AND THEN ADD A SPACE. It will go away after that lmfao

If you have a triple duplicate, then repeat the process but add a double space and it wont show as a duplicate. Repeat the process as much as you like but not sure if this is something you can do when you have hundreds of duplicates in the header. I only had to deal with 3 duplicates hahaha
