    Not enough resources

    Good morning,
I am working on a project to use Excel to create a tool to expedite creation of estimates for new buildings. This project that will require me to handle large files, some in excess of 57000 rows, the smallest in the vicinity of 10000 rows. When I parse the data down to 10000 rows I am within the limits of pivot tables. I am able to create the pivot table but as soon as I try to set up row and column labels the entire PC freezes. Eventually I get a popup error stating "Excel cannot complete this task with available resources. Choose less data or close other applications." If I click OK I get a second popup window stating "Not enough system resources to display completely." I have done a cold boot of the PC, started nothing but Excel and my results are the same. Nothing is set to start at startup. The PC has 8gb of memory. Is it likely this is truly a resource issue or could the message be indicative of a different problem?
    Thanks much
    Bill

    Re: Not enough resources

57000 rows should be well within the limits of pivot tables- how many columns are in the data source?

    Re: Not enough resources

At 57000 rows I got an error message stating " You cannot place a field with more than 16384 items in the column area". There are 8 columns in the spread sheet. Even doing something like changing the value of a field from subtotal to max or average is enough to make it spin it's wheels long enough for me to check my email and walk to the front of the building and back.
I am about to pull it into Access and see what happens.
    thanks,
    Bill

OK it seems to be a PT limit. I just created 8 columns with 150 000 rows, then tried to pivot that - I got that same 16 384 message

Pivot tables are designed to summarise data. Why would you put a field with more than 16000 different items in the column area??

    Re: Not enough resources

Doesnt really matter why (although I agree with you), point is, PT seems to have that limit.

Perhaps a way around that would be to start pulling out smaller summaries of the data, or breaking it down onto smaller chunks and then trying a PT on that?

    Re: Not enough resources

Quite hard to show more items than there are columns on a sheet.

    Re: Not enough resources

I meant, somehow break the rows down into more manageable chunks

    Re: Not enough resources

I meant it's not just a pt limit.

    Re: Not enough resources

Asked IT to look into whether my computer could be souped up to run faster. Maybe that would help. At the moment I'm resigned to the lag time and moving on as the project can't wait for a faster PC.
thanks to all for the suggestions

    Re: Not enough resources

Still not going to help with the 16000 limit though. Thats a PT limit, not a hardware restriction
