Unable to change pivot data source to connection

    Hi there

I have a bunch of pivots (on different tabs and also different spreadsheets) all pointing to the same data source (an excel table) which in some instances the data source was duplicated so i've taken one instance of the table, saved it separately and then created a connection, and now I want all the pivots to just point to the connection. This way, there is a single source of data that more than one excel spreadsheet can point to.

However when I try to change the data source on my pivots - the 'Use an external data source' option is inactive (greyed out). It would take me bloody ages to re-create all the pivots, because they have bespoke formatting, and lots of slicers which are also formatted, and graphs.

Why oh why can't I change my data source to a connection? Is there any way around this????

    Help!
    Jemma

Re: Unable to change pivot data source to connection

I have an idea and it might not work but what do we have to lose by experimenting?

Go to Data -> Queries and Connections. The external source might show up as a connection. If so, right click on it and select properties from the pop-up menu.

Click on the definition tab in the dialog box that comes up. You should see a connection string and a command text string. If you do, let know and take a snapshot of the Connections Property dialog box. I'll give you some code to run that will get the true connection string (for some kinds of connections some things are hidden), and then tell you how to change this to your new source.

Or you may get lucky. Copy the contents of the Connection string and paste it into an editor such as notepad. Manually edit the connection replacing the old path name with the new one. Copy and paste the edited results back into the connection string box. Sometimes that works.

How many spreadsheets do you have to convert?
One spreadsheet to rule them all. One spreadsheet to find them. One spreadsheet to bring them all and at corporate, bind them.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.
