    Waterfall Chart not formatting correctly

    Hi

I am having an issue with a Waterfall chart, in that some of the columns do not start (or end) in line with the preceding / succeeding column. If I added a connector line to show where one column finished and the next started, the connector line wouldn't be horizontal (which I need it to be) but displayed at an angle. Interestingly, when I try to ensure that the subtotal column (i.e. invisible column underneath each visible column) is selected as the total (in the Format Data Point pane) I get 2 issues - firstly I can see that the visible columns are not positioned directly above the subtotal (i.e. invisible) columns. Some start are a little higher than where the subtotal column finishes, some start are a little lower than where the subtotal column finishes. Secondly - when I double click on a data point in the chart (to open the 'Format Data Point menu), the option to tick the 'set as total' box doesn't appear.

Any guidance on how to rectify would be massively appreciated!!

    Thanks
    WTS

Re: Waterfall Chart not formatting correctly

I am having trouble understanding. Observations so far:

    1) The chart data is almost all (except for the horizontal category axis data for the horizontal line series) linked to a different spreadsheet file on your computer rather than the sample file. It makes it difficult to understand exactly what data in the table you intended to show up where on the chart.

    2) The waterfall chart is a basic stacked column chart, and it looks like you intend column "ITD" to be the first (bottom) stack, "base" is the second stack, "sub-total" is the 3rd stack, "increase" is the 4th stack, and "decrease" is the 5th (top) stack. Does that sound right.

    3) A couple of the data series ("sub-total" and "decrease") are formatted as "invisible" (no border no fill color), so they can be difficult to see. I formatted them to be visible in some way so I could see them.

    4) If I assume that the series you need to "follow" across the waterfall chart are the "increase" and "decrease" series, it looks like they track each other just fine. I have to "skip" over the "blank" categories (rows 36, 40, 42,...). Recognizing that need to skip, I can follow the increases and decreases across the chart, and each successive increase/decrease starts horizontally from the previous data point.

Since I don't fully understand what you are trying to do here, I cannot make specific recommendations. I wonder if most of the problem is that you have formatted the "decrease" data series as invisible, so you cannot see it. I am not sure what the purpose of the "blank" categories is, either (perhaps placeholders for showing intermediate subtotals??). I think my best advice at this point is to format all data series so they are visible so you can see them all. I might also hide/delete the data labels, as they seem to obscure things. When you have the chart debugged, then you can make some data series invisible again and add the data labels back in.
