I am trying to create a chart that counts the occurences of a week number in a table. So I need to display how many times something has happened in that particular week number. Is there a way to create it from just the single table or do I need to make a seperate table with more info?

In the table example it would be 3 occurences in week 40, 3 in week 41, 2 in week 45 and so on...
Give your list a heading (e.g. Week No.) select all your data and create a pivot table with chart (use the drop down on the insert tab under the tables and PivotTable section) you can select PivotChart. Once you select the position of the pivot, drag Week No. to Axis Field and also to Values, changing Values to count rather than sum.
There's always a way.
There's an issue uploading examples. Had to find a work around.
Your office version shows 2013, so why not just create a simple pivot chart and use the weeks as the axis labels and then for the values, count the weeks.

Thanks, that looks perfect. Is there a way to get weeks that have no actions in them reporting in the table as well? So if week 40 has 5, 41 has 0, and 42 3 I want week 41 to report zero on the axis.
To do the way you want, you need to create a table of data and a table with the numbers of the week. It is necessary to create relations between tables. In the pivot table that you created, check to show items without data in rows. For blanks, show "zero".
just set the option in field setting>Layout & Print
tick option show items with no data

this solution doesnt work
it only worked in this example because i had used 40 previously in pivot table so it was cached in rather than "filling the gap"
so i suppose you can purposely cache in labels you want in i guess
