Distinguishing between missing data and zeros in pivot charts

    Hello,

I've been stuck on this issue, and I'm not sure if it's actually complicated or just has a simple fix that I am completely missing.

I'm working with some stem count data for plants. We have designated sites that are revisited once a year. However, there is some data missing, and in some cases, we will collect data at a site one year, but not the next.

When making charts, I end up with gaps for both zero data and missing data. I attached a chart that just shows a subset of my data. I changed my pivot table so that missing data is labeled as N/A, and you can see this in the chart as well. For this type of data, the zeros are important, so I want to be able to distinguish them from points where there is just gaps in the data. Obviously the labels will work fine for this, but I was just wondering if there is a way to either get rid of the gaps, display zeros (either with a bar, or with using a label for only zero values). I really just want everything to look as clean as possible.

    Thanks everyone!

In Pivot Table option, you should be able to set what missing/blank values should be shown as and what errors are displayed as.

That's where I added in the N/A for all the empty (i.e. missing cells), but I'm wondering what the next steps would be.

Next step? Not sure what you mean. If you just want to differentiate between missing data points and true zero. I'd just add data labels.

I'll just stick with the labels then. Thank you for your help.
