    Overlapping Stacked Bar Charts

    Good morning,

I'm trying to create two sets of stacked bar charts in the same chart.

There are 6 categories and each category will have two sets of data. Group A and Group B. I have Group A set to primary axis and Group B set to secondary axis. However, the bars are over lapping and I can't figure out how to separate them out. I've fiddled the Gap/overlapping in the axis setting, but the data bars separate.

I've googled around and can't come up with a clear, clean cut answer.

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Gretel.

More detail? As a first guess, it sounds like you want a "clustered and stacked" bar chart. The simplest technique I know for getting clustered column/bar charts is this: https://peltiertech.com/clustered-st...mn-bar-charts/ Note that chart itself is a basic, run of the mill stacked bar. Most of what makes it a clustered and stacked bar is in how the data are arranged in the spreadsheet.

Thanks for this. I've looked at that example. However, it doesn't really do what I need it to do.

I've attached a generic image to illustrate this. Gold bars are for Group A and grey for Group B. What I need to do is turn these into stacked bar charts. I haven't added the second set of values to these bars yet. I have experimented with having Group A being on the primary axis and Group B on the secondary and then adding the additional values, but they end up over lapping (see second screenshot).

Now I think I am really confused. If you need a stacked column chart, why not use Excel's built in stacked column chart type?

    Re: Overlapping Stacked Bar Charts

Apologies. I have used the built-in feature. When I use the built-in stacked bar chart it turns into image 2. The two sets of bars are now overlapping and I don't that. Gold set of bars are set to primary axis and the grey bars are set as secondary axis in order to keep the data from applying to just one bar when I need it to plot on two.

I need two stacked bars for each section: 2a, 2b, etc. to provide comparisons between group A and group B. For example, in the first image gold bar represents 1 value for Group A, I will add another series in to make the stacked bar chart to go with A. However, the grey bar represents group b. There will be another series that will be added to make group b into a stacked bar chart as well.

If I use the gap and overlap options to try to separate them out, it just breaks the bars apart. See below image.

I am still confused. It looks again to me like you are trying to create a clustered and stacked column chart. As I noted above, most of creating such a chart is what is happening in the spreadsheet, but I cannot see what is in the spreadsheet when you only post a picture of the resulting chart. It looks like the green series is stacked on the gold series. I don't know what is going on with the purple series. Is this supposed to be stacked on top of the grey bar? How have you arranged the data in the spreadsheet to get this look?

If you can, it would help us help you if you can upload a sample file -- not a picture.
