Complete beginner, request from boss, pivot table

Hello, I'm a complete beginner at Excel but my boss has asked me to compile a huge amount of simple data.

    2 fields

    Nation, Travel Agent

I would like to create a simple pivot graph. That's easy enough, but I would like a THIRD field which COUNTS the number of occurrences of Nation and Travel Agent that MATCH.

    For example

    Italy Travel Corp
    Italy Travel Corp
    Italy Travel Corp
    France Happy Corp
    France Happy Corp
    France Happy Corp
    France Happy Corp

In the pivot table I would like it to show THREE customers from ITALY referred by TRAVEL CORP.
So in the same way also FOUR customers from FRANCE referred by HAPPY CORP.

I hope someone can help, Excel has a steep learning curve it seems,

    Regards,

If you attach a small sample workbook, this should be easy done.

Go Advanced -> Manage Attachments -> Upload

So probably you have your Nation and Travel Agent used as headewrs for columns.

    1) Select all data including headers (as a matter of fact, it would be enough if active cell is within the region with data, but let's make it eklegant way).
    2) from Insert Ribbon select Pivot Table (and new sheet)
    3) drag Nation to rows labels, drag Travel agent to row labels too! (not to columns, which would be a standard action)
    4) drag any of these two into values area.
    5) change layout to table report layout (Ribbon Design available when pivot table is active)
    6) you may (?or may not?) also like to disable displaying totals for nations

Hello, thanks so much for your replies. I've tried following the instructions but it seems my basic knowledge is just to low (or I'm to stupid).

As Kersplash suggested, I have uploaded a small sample file.

    Thanks for your help!

    Amazing quick reply.

I've got the Nation and Travel agent into row and column, but everytime I try to combine them one disappears.

I've attached an image called Dumbo-boy to show where I'm at.

What's the click order to effectively combine them?

    Sorry worst student ever!

Have you tried sliding the fields into the correct positions on the right-hand side of your screen?

Travel Agent & Nation to Rows, then Travel Agent to Values area.

This is as far as I've gotten. I can't get three yellow bars like you've got.

Re: Complete beginner, request from boss, pivot table

The fields in your screen shot don't match the ones in Kersplash's file (post #5). You have to manually drag, as Kaper states, 'Nation' into the Row labels area beneath 'Travel Agent'. You will then need to manually drag 'Travel Agent' from the top of the Pivot Table field list (under the heading "Choose fields to add to the report") into the Values area. 'Travel Agent' is being used twice so just clicking the checkbox won't work.
