I downloaded my AMEX CC activity into an excel spreadsheet with dates, vendor, and amount. The pivot table is not letting me group by dates. It says “cannot group that selection”. I have already changed the dates from text to date, and there are no black cells in the range. What else could it be?
The most likely culprit would be strings masquerading as dates, but you already said you checked that. The only other thing is where you are trying to use the date in the pivot table. Only column or row headers will work. Otherwise, you'll have to play with the source data in a helper column.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a sample spreadsheet is more likely to be worked on.

Guess what I just figured it out on my own. I noticed that the date column had “wrap text” even though it was not need, the export from AMEX website came like that. When I changed it, unclicked it from the whole column, I am able to group my dates in the pivot table.
