How to best create histograms in Excel? I already have a method, but maybe I can improve.

    Hi all,

As I'm revising and even recreating some of my data sheets, I'm curious if there are better and/or easier ways to create histograms than my current procedure. The way I set up my sheets is this:

    1. Create bins manually.

    2. Do a frequency count on my data referencing the bins.

    3. The frequency count is regulated with OFFSET allowing for a dynamic lookback period.

    4. Histograms are created using the frequency count.

I'm attaching both picture and workbook sample.

I just realized that I can create histograms automatically in Excel. At first, I felt a bit stupid realizing this, but I also see that there's problems with this. For one - I guess I can't have a dynamic lookback period as I've accomplished. Also, no control on the bin sizes?

Anyway, I have many such sheets to make, so would be grateful for any comments. Maybe the way I currently do it is the way to proceed.

    Thanks in advance!

Would love to get some more input here from experienced users.

Another thing I'm trying now to make my sheets smaller with less data is to simply create the histograms in the bins/frequency counts directly using the inbuilt formatting in Excel. I may even prefer this over a regular histogram:

But I assume there's no way around actually having to build the bins manually?

What do you mean by "build the bins manually"? Bins will not magically create themselves out of nothing, so you must have some method for entering bins into the spreadsheet. If you have a preferred algorithm for generating the bins, you can use a formula (or a sequence of formulas) to generate the bins rather than manually entering the bins, if that is what you mean. Wikipedia's page discusses a few algorithms for choosing number of bins, from which you should be able to compute the actual bins: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Histog...bins_and_width
