Distinguishing certain days from others on a line chart

    January 10, 2019

    Hello again,

From a sheet (Daily) where I record the data I make a monthly chart (DailyChart) showing days (Column A) along the x-axis and two line-chart lines that are informed by the sheet's data for Factor B (Column B) and Factor C (Column C).

In the last column (D), some days I type an "x" and some days I leave that cell empty.

    Below is a sample sheet.

    SampleExcelSheet01.jpg

(which I now see is much bigger than the original. First time trying this.)

On the chart, on the two lines that go up and down, is there a way to distinguish between those days when I do type an "x" from the days I don't? I thought of using those little markers such as a dot or a triangle at each data point where I did type an "x" in Column D, but it's not at all obvious to me how to get the markers or any other distinguishing characteristic to appear only on days with an "x."

    Is this possible?

    Thanks.

You need to add extra series to plot the markers. Instead of x you would use the appropriate value from either column B or C.

Format the extra series to have markers but no line format

Andy Pope, I have given as much thought as I can to figuring out how to implement your idea but I still don't know even how to get started.

    See attached.

Create line chart no markers on all 4 series.
Format 3rd and 4th series to have markers but no line format

Andy Pope, thanks for creating that table and chart. They are quite helpful. I think I understand 90% of what I'll need to understand in order to start converting my own workbook.

The problem is that you've added the ability to distinguish between the Column B and the Column C data. What I meant by my example and in the narrative description of it is that on certain days I want the markers to appear on both lines in the chart. Said another way, on the days where I enter an "x" I want both markers to appear on the line chart, but when I don't enter an "x" I want neither marker to appear. It's binary in the sense that either both markers appear or both do not appear.

I will bang away at converting my workbook to implement your suggestions, but if you find the time, can you address the problem described in the previous paragraph?

a marker will appear for each value in the 2 extra columns. If you want 2 on the same date just add the relevant 2 values.
If you don't want a marker don't provide a value

    Andy Pope,

I think I know how to upload my workbook so you can see the problem I'm having trying to implement your suggestions. Should I proceed to do so?

If so and if it uploads satisfactorily, you'll see that the two line chart lines for part of January 2018 are missing some but not all of the line segments. I suspect what I'm doing wrong is a simple fix, but nothing I've tried works.

Also, please note how many changes I have to make on the Data sheet. Is there any way to use the "x" characteristic, maybe with VBA?

I've never done this -- uploading a live file -- and I hope you'll be patient with any mistakes I make.

Attach a sample workbook (not a picture or pasted copy). Make sure there is just enough data to demonstrate your need. Include a BEFORE sheet and an AFTER sheet in the workbook if needed to show the process you're trying to complete or automate. Make sure your desired results are shown, mock them up manually if necessary.

    Remember to desensitize the data.

Click on GO ADVANCED and then scroll down to Manage Attachments to open the upload window.
