Gantt chart add multiple start / stop tasks

Hi there,

I wanna ask if it is possible to make a Gantt Chart but instead of using date as the main line I want to use numbers from 1 to 90 for example. And I want for example to use Task 1 between numbers 1 and 10 and then from 30 to 40. Is that possible? (Multiple tasks would start and end in between the range multiple times)

I'm not sure if I'm getting you. I can draw a simple explanation in paint if you want, I haven't been doing any Gantt Charts before so that's why I'm asking. If it was regarding date times I could use the ones provided by Microsoft, but I need plain numbers instead of dates.

Yes, you can do a Gantt chart with numbers. There is nothing special about dates/times in Excel. As far as Excel is concerned, dates and times are just numbers anyway (see this if you are unfamiliar with how Excel works with dates/times: http://www.cpearson.com/Excel/datetime.htm ). Take one of MSFT's examples -> select the horizontal axis -> format -> number as general and you will see that the dates and times are just numbers (probably in the 40000 ballpark). You can use whatever Gantt template or example you are already familiar with and make sure the number formatting is set to general or similar.

Note that the procedure will probably be different depending on chart type (in cell charting with conditional formatting, stacked bar (older versions of Excel), built in Gantt specialty chart (newer versions of Excel)), so we will need to know exactly how you are trying to build your Gantt chart in order to help.

I'm using 2007, so I cannot use the built in Gantt specialty chart. My inclination would be to use a stacked bar chart. Are you familiar with stacked bar charts?

Yes that's exactly what I'm looking for the one file on the bottom of the page. I had a look on it and it's kind of complicated, I will either have to reverse-engineer this and change the format to what I need, or maybe you could help me if you know how to do that quickly. If you download and open the "RLS_Start_Stop_Barchart(pcb).xlsm‎" file then on the Chart_Jul tab you can see what I'm aiming for, but instead of having time on the top axis I would want to have plain numbers from 1 to 90 and on the left axis instead of dates I would want to have specific Tasks, if that makes sense

I don't know what progress you have made over the last day or two. Do you have a specific question about the procedure? I would expect:

1) Data entry into the spreadsheet (Columns B:Y of the Jul17 tab in that file)
2) Formulas -- if needed -- to compute the "duration" for each stack in the stacked bar. (columns Z:AX of the Jul17 tab in that file). Of course, in your case, "duration" has nothing to do with time, it just means the length of each segment of the stacked bar.
3) Create and format the chart based on the durations in Z:AX.

The paperclip icon has not worked for some time. To add an attachment, click on "Reply to Thread" or "Go Advanced" to bring up the main post editor. Then scroll down to find the "manage attachments" link which will bring up the file uploader.

I note that Microsoft's example is using an in cell conditional formatting technique to create a Gantt chart. If you want to, we can pursue using this technique as well.

However, with what you have in your example, I think a simple stacked bar chart will be easier. Assuming the numbers in your spreadsheet are correct, I:

1) Select F9:N23 -> Insert -> stacked bar chart. If I like the default formatting scheme, my Gantt chart is finished.
2) If I don't like the default formatting scheme, I change the format of the various elements to get the look I want. For example, I probably want the "starting part no." data series to be formatted as "invisible" (no fill no border), so I select each of those data series and change the formatting as desired.

Your file did not include any of your attempts to create this chart, so I'm not certain if you tried that or what difficulty you had creating the chart. That's what I would do next. Is that helpful?

Sorry, I don't have much time to do this at work to be honest (busy most of the time) but now I've tried it and yeah, it's exactly what I wanted, I just need to format it to the way I like, thank you for the tip

Edit: It's not working properly, for the first Starting Part No. and Duration, it's ok but afterwards the numbers add up. So instead of Task 1 having start part no. 7 and duration 5, it starts at 14 but duration is ok

That is exactly how stacked charts work, so the problem must be in how you entered or calculated the values to put into the spreadsheet. If a bar is supposed to start at the number 7, then the starting no. for that bar needs to be 7-SUM(all previous entries in the category), or however that kind of logic/formula would fit into your existing spreadsheet.

I currently have a project tracker that has start and end dates. However, I need to be able to start the project, have an end/start date in the middle for a new task for the same project, and then have that task end and new one start and finish.
An example is I have a project that is 50 days long. We start the project on the day "X" and the project will go to QC somewhere in that 50-day window. QC has the project for "X" amount of days and then it goes
back to lead until the project is done on day 50. The trick is the dates and duration have to be customizable they are not all the same.
