    Boxplot shows wrong Median

    Hello everybody

    I am sitting here for hours now trying to understand why Excel is making wrong calculations for my median, but can't find any solution. I hope one of you have an Answer for me!

    boxplot.jpg

    As you can see it already looks very strange, that the Median equals the MAX value. For group 1 Excel gives me a median of 4, but as you can see from my listing on the left, it should be 3.
    I am totally confused and really hope somebody has an idea.

    In the first place the Data had values from -2 to 2, but I thought this might have been the problem, so I added 2 to each value, resulting in a range from 0 to 4. But still I have the same problem...

    Here you can find the file zipped into my one drive: //1drv.ms/u/s!AieKkB4JZaJFhJVKKYKxWoe-qCj8Rw

    Best regards from germany!

    It is hard to debug pictures. If I enter those 18 values into Excel and enter =MEDIAN(A1:A18), my copy of Excel returns 3. I am not sure why your copy is returning 4. Perhaps if you can upload a sample file to the forum (Post Reply or Go Advanced -> scroll down to Manage Attachments).

    Re: Boxplot shows wrong Median

    Thanks a lot for taking a look mate!
    In the first place I was not allowed to add a link.

    Maybe it works this time:
    //1drv.ms/u/s!AieKkB4JZaJFhJVKKYKxWoe-qCj8Rw

    nope it doesn't, so you have to add the https manually
    unfortunately the file upload is also just bugging around...
    It's a ZIP archive, because otherwise one drive would not open the map, because diagrams are not displayable in the online-Excel version.

    How did you attempt the upload to this forum? If you used the paperclip icon, that has not worked for a long time. If you followed the instructions I gave (Go Advanced -> scroll down to Manage Attachments), the uploader should work just fine. Many on this forum are uncomfortable or otherwise cannot download from third party sites, so uploading directly to the forum is preferred.

    You are using a chart type that is not supported in my older version, so I cannot comment on what Excel is doing wrong or why. Hopefully this will bump your thread to the top where someone with a newer version can see and comment.

    @Vickytoria12,
    Could you upload new sample file where all the references are within the sample workbook?

    Your current sample has references to external workbook and I can't determine what's contained in the source.

    Ex: Both Chart - Diagramm 4 & 5 has data source (series and axis) referencing file stored in your local OneDrive folder. And not ranges stored in your sample.

    Re: Boxplot shows wrong Median

    Hello Vickytoria12 and Welcome to Excel Forum.
    Doing some guessing here that the ranges for Sympathie 1, 2 and 3 are A3:A20, K3:K26 and U3:U23
    The median for the three ranges is, respectively: 1, 1, and 0 which corresponds with either Q3 (Sympathie 1&2) or Q1 (Sympathie 3) which are parts of the boxes, so the lines for median don't show.
    I have also included a box and whisker for the values shown in the screen shot and again the median (3) corresponds to the Q3.
    Let us know if you have any questions.
