How to plot both ch1 and ch2 data for temperature on same graph

    Hi,

I recently received a weather station thingy for christmas and it has like 8 channels/sensors. SO i put the sensors all over my house and it collects data for each sensor. So i wanted to plot just two of the sensors (see enclosed data) using excel but for some reason is seems kinda hard .

What i want to do is ON THE SAME PLOT show channel 1 and channel 2 temperature.

Is this possible? and if so how

The readings seem to occur every 5 minutes - do you need to plot them with that frequency? It might be better to produce a summary table from the data where you aggregate all the readings in, say, 15-minute increments. This summary table would have a column for date/time, and then a column for Ch1 and another for Ch2 (using the AVERAGEIFS function to average the temperatures within each time-slot). and then you would use this table as the source for your graph.

    Hope this helps.

Short but useless answer -- yes this is possible. I'm not sure exactly how to answer the how part of the question. there are obviously multiple steps needed to get the data into a chart, and I'm not sure which step(s) you would have trouble with. Here's how I would expect to proceed:

    1) Import text data into Excel/spreadsheet app -- maybe as simple as File -> Open or Import External Data -> From text.
    2) Rearrange the data so that date/time stamps are in the left column, desired Channel+temp labels are in successive columns moving to the right:

A pivot table may be the quickest/easiest way to rearrange the data like this, or some other formula/utility.
    3) With the data rearranged, simply select the table and insert the desired chart.

Something like that should work just fine until your data set exceeds the total number of points allowed for a data series (something like 32000 points per series and 250000 points over all data series in Excel 2007 -- assuming that is still correct in your profile).

Which step do you have trouble with?

    hi,

i tried the pivot table thing.........really could not get it to work like i wanted.

what i want is basically a line graph for each channel ........but on the same graph..........

Without some detail (or maybe a sample file) of what you tried, it is difficult to know what went wrong. What did your pivot table look like when it was done? Left column contained the date/time stamps and other columns with the temperatures? Did you fail to get any kind of line chart, or did you get a line chart and didn't like something about it?

Actually a pivot chart should be able to display both channels on one graph.

I'm not sure what difficulties you are having. Here's what I did with your .csv file:

    1) Open file in Excel -- Excel automatically parses the text file according to its default settings, and I get channel, time, temperature, humidity, dewpoint, heat index columns.
    2) Select the source data -> Insert -> Pivot table.
    3) From pivot fields panes, drag time into the row labels field, channel into the column labels field, and sum of temperature into the values field.
3a) Because of the index row between channels, the pivot table adds a "time" row and a "channel" column -- I can use the dropdown arrows on the row and column labels to filter these out.
    4) Select the pivot table -> Insert -> chart -> regular line.

At this point, I have a line chart with date/time along the horizontal axis, temperature on the vertical axis, and two line series showing the temperature for each channel. Does that process work for you? What did you do differently? Are you satisfied with those results, or do you need it to do more?
