    Need help recreating chart showing distribution and avg wages

    I want to show distribution of annual salaries (y axis) by position (x axis) across my company with an added layer showing where the average falls by location (secondary x axis). I've attached a sample picture but can't figure out what type of chart it is, let alone how to build it. I originally thought a simple column chart with an avg vertical line added but that's not worked. Any ideas?!? Bonus if you can draft up a sample in an excel template!

    Thanks!!!

    Yes, I am aware but I can't even tell what kind of chart this is so I can't even attempt to create it in excel thereby I don't have an excel file to upload. Any help would be appreciated.

    Can you not provide a sheet with the raw data you wish to use?

    My apologies. Attached is a worksheet with sample data and my attempt to put together a chart. I believe it's a histogram or frequency chart but I can't seem to get it to look remotely close with the frequencies + average bar.

    Really appreciate your help and patience.

    Re: Need help recreating chart showing distribution and avg wages

    What I see in the picture is something like a stacked bar chart -- maybe stretching out into something akin to a box and whisker's plot (which is often created as a stacked bar chart).

    I created a simple box plot with these steps:
    1) In B27, I enter =B4
    2) In B28, I enter =B8
    3) In B29, I enter =B7-B8
    4) In B30, I enter =B9-B7
    5) I select B27:E30 -> Insert -> Bar charts -> stacked bar subtype.
    6) I select the first data series -> format series -> no fill in bar.

    I end up with a basic "box" plot where there is a box for each category that extends from min to average and a second box that extends from average to max.

    There's quite a bit to go from that simple box plot to something like the OP, but it would mostly be adding rows to the spreadsheet and adding those rows to the chart as additional data series.

    Is that close to what you want?

    MrShorty.....Thank you!! It is not the exact same but definitely does the trick and accomplishes enough of what I need to show in a chart so Thank you! I never would have come up with your idea of using a box plot. Brilliant! I'm checking this one off as solved!
