Data smoothing of a specific area on graph?

    Hey,

Hoping someone might be able to point me in the right direction. While I understand smoothing removes accuracy the main peaks in my data is what is important and would like to smoothen out the 'steps' in my data which have come from instrumental noise. I'd like to specifically smoothen out the steps for the purpose of my report - unfortunately with COVID-19 I'm unable to repeat my experiments.

    Any suggestions please?

Your pictures failed to attach. Be sure to follow the instructions in the yellow banner at the top to make sure that attachments attach correctly.

Do you know what smoothing algorithm you want to use? Excel's charts have a built in "moving average" algorithm built into the chart trendline feature. I am not aware of any other built in chart smoothing algorithms.

Moving average is also pretty easy to implement in the spreadsheet. Something like =AVERAGE(desired average window) in an adjacent cell and copied down will generate a moving average of the data. You could then use this column to generate the chart.

Other smoothing algorithms can be programmed into the spreadsheet if you know the algorithm. Build the formula(s) in an adjacent column(s) and then use the smoothed data to create the chart.

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply back.

Would you be able to explain how I can experiment with the moving averages?

    thanks

Assuming you want to use the chart trendline feature, follow the instructions here for adding a trendline, then experiment with different values for the period. https://support.office.com/en-US/art...4-901a745842ad
