Can I show six variables in one chart? I've found a way to do 5, just not 6.

Can I show six variables in one chart? I've found a way to do 5, just not 6.

    Hi,

Can I make a chart that shows the following for used cars, all in one chart:

    Price ($)
    Age (yrs)
    Mileage
    Engine Size (1.2l, 1.5l, 2l)
    Gears (Auto or Manual)
    Fuel Type (Petrol or Diesel)

I know that I can cover 5 of these with a scatter, for example:
    • Y = Price
    • X = Age
    • Size of marker = Engine size
    • Shape of marker = Gears
    • Color of marker = Fuel type

But then I am still left without mileage. Is there a way to squeeze a sixth item in there somehow?

Do you need to visual encode the information? Could you not display that information in a data label.
In fact would it not be easier to display most of that info in a label

    Hi Andy,

    Thanks for your reply.

I must be honest, I'm not sure what you mean... do you mean show it without it being demonstrated visually?

If so, as mileage is a measure I need to allow it to be compared. Perhaps though, it could be:

    Y Axis = Price
    X Axis = Mileage
    Size of marker = Age
    Shape of marker = Gears
Colour of marker = Engine size
and then there could be a D or P label in each for fuel type?

I guess kind-of, but as I understand it I can represent items through marker shape and colour also.

Yes you can but I did not have time to recreate all of that complexity just to illustrate how I thought the data label could be used.
