    Scatter chart line problem

I'm trying to graph a set of data pairs with a line joining points in the order of the x values. It's a stream longitudinal profile, with distance as the x value and elevation as the y value. I want a line joining the data points in the order of the x values, which increase from one value to the next. But the lines that show up jump all over the place, between points that aren't in sequence, and I can't seem to find a way to fix it. I've tried graphing it as a scatter plot and then adding a line, and as a scatter plot with a line, but neither one works.

    Re: Scatter chart line problem

Are you required to use Excel? LO calc's chart engine has an option to "sort by x values".

If you must use Excel, there is no similar setting in Excel. If you want the points connected in a certain order (in order of increasing X value, in this case), then you must sort the data points in the spreadsheet in the desired order. Your description of the problem does not indicate if you have already done this, or if you are not allowed to do this.

Yes, the points are sorted in order of increasing x value. This is a chart I've produced dozens of times for similar data over the past twenty or more years, which is why the problem is so vexing (and irritating). I've already checked that all the data is in number format as well.

If you are certain the values are sorted in order of increasing x value, I don't think we will be able to debug what is going on from just a picture. Can you upload a sample file that illustrates the problem?

    Re: Scatter chart line problem

I checked that the data were in increasing x-value order and even did a sort to be sure, but it didn't change anything. But somehow closing the file and reopening it fixed the problem. I have no idea as to what was wrong, but it seems to be working now. Thanks for your help.
