Cannot figure out how to make a simple chart anymore in Excel

    Hi all,

frustrated here. I have table data - row 1 Years 1953 to 2020, Row 7 totals. If I select both rows and try to insert a line chart I get two horizontal lines, as opposed to one line showing totals with an X axis showing the years and the Select data series dialog is meaningless to me - I do not understand why Excel assumes automatically that I have two lines of data as opposed to one of titles and one of data. How do i get what I want?

    Year 1953 1954 1955 1956 1957
    Male 6 2 0 5 5
    Female 0 0 0 0 0
    Total 6 2 0 5 5
    Male 6 8 8 13 18
    Female 0 0 0 0 0
    Total 6 8 8 13 18

    I want a graph of the following pairs (X, Y): (1953, 6), (1954, 8), (1955, 9),....

In the good old days (a long time ago) Excel was PERFECT at doing this but it is now completely counter-intuitive...

    TIA,

    Dermot

by default, chart and graph wizards read data only one way. you have to have it architected that way, otherwise it will display the wrong way

Simple trick: clear the cell that says "Year", then select the two rows (including the now blank cell) and then insert the chart. Then put "Year" back in if needed.
