Formatted cell not staying intact in Pivot Table

Due to confidentiality I can't share a sample sheet. Sorry, I know that must make things tedious. I tried to recreate the table to show an example, but was unsuccessful.

In a pivot table, I formatted a series of cells in which the text is changed in a 90 degree angle. Upon updating the table, the cells go back to 0. I toggled around with the "PivotTable Options..." but it's not fixing it.

What would be the purpose of PT remembering the format of a particular cell when the next time the PT is refreshed what might have previously been a column of text values was now some numbers.

Seems to me the PT is doing exactly what it should.

Sorry, the formatted cells in question are column headers. Those will never change.

Maybe you don't have the 'Preserve cell formatting on update' ticked?

I did. Checked and unchecked. Nothing worked.

Difficult to comment further without seeing the problem in context. Can't you just anonymise any sensitive data in a copy of the file and upload.

As I did that to create a mock table it all the sudden is working. I don't know what I did differently. I can't delete the table and recreate it because I have too many conditional formatting formulas in place that I don't want to start over with.
