Hello,
I am trying to create a custom map of my country in Excel, with several regions that could be highlighted when selected via slicer. I can provide a link of the map (not sure if it is allowed) where it is visible how it should basically work, but I don't know if it is possible to create something like that in Excel.
Any help is much appreciated,

Follow these steps,
1- Prepare the data in a pivot table
2- Connect the pivot table with Excel Map data input
3- Insert slicers to create interactive dashboard with a map
Next choose Insert tab > Filters > Slicer and choose the fields to become filters for your dashboard. If your data contains date columns in the proper format and you are running Excel 2013+, you could also insert a timeline slicer, which is great to filter years and months.
(You can add more tables and charts by copying the existing pivot table – this way your slicers will be automatically connected to all new pivot objects (tables and charts). For example, you could create a pivot table showing Top 10 of your customers and turn it into a bar chart.)

I am not sure if you can connect a Pivot table to a Map function. It gets back: "You can't create this chart type with data inside a Pivot table..."
The problem with a filled map chart in my case is that Excel recognizes easily states in U.S., Australia etc, but does not recognize regions in "other" countries, Croatia in this example, so I am trying to find a way to create such a map, a filled map chart to be more precise.
Microsoft can be very English-speaking-world-centric at times! I am not sure that you will be able to do what you want natively in Excel. It may be possible with VBA - I can move this thread if necessary.
